Right now I know a substantial number of people who are looking for a job, but can’t think of a single one who’s found a job through the major internet job boards. Perhaps this has been your experience as well.
Earlier this summer, a CNN articleThe Hidden Job Market (Jessica Dickler, June 10) took a look at the impact of internet job boards on the employment world and came to conclude what so many job seekers are finding out on the front lines. Real life results aren’t living up to the promise.

STRATEGY #4 TO SURVIVE A DOWN ECONOMY
By Kevin M
When ever the economy turns sour, there’s a general tendency to stay on current jobs as long as possible, under the belief that it’s better to stay where we’re established than to go to another company where we’ll be the new/low man on the totem pole. In addition, an often reflexive response to the news of a job loss, or an impending one, is to immediately seek new employment at competing firms within the same industry.
On the surface, these strategies have merit. In the former, we hold on as long as possible, hoping that either we’ll keep our current situation as long as possible, or maybe we’ll even out last the downturn. It seems to make sense to stay in the same career and in the same industry—after all, that’s where our skills are concentrated, and where we have the greatest income potential. But do these represent the best strategies?

I was a server all through college and even for a couple of years after I graduated. I worked in fine dining environments, up-scale restaurants, and pubs, wearing anything from long-sleeved dress shirts with a tie to a polo shirt and khakis. Everywhere I worked, I wanted to be known as the best server. Not one of the best. THE best.
During my “serving career,” I worked with a lot of people who did just enough to get by. I never understood that. Those same co-workers could never understand why I consistently made more in tips than they did and why customers would request me as their server. I decided that if I was going to be working, I was going to get the most out of it by giving it my all. And the results paid off.

MONDAY MOTIVATIONAL MOMENT
By Dave Kelly
“That’s it? That’s this week’s tip?”
Yes, and if you get this one right, the rest of your life will be fulfilling and satisfying. Ninety percent of the input to your brain on a daily basis is negative. Only 10% is positive. Much of the negative stuff is put into our heads by ourselves. We look in the mirror in the morning and criticize every blemish and imperfection that we see. No wonder we go off into our day in a bad mood.

Imagine there’s a way, not only to keep your job, but also to get a raise in the bargain, yes, even in this very difficult job market when so many are content merely to hold on to what they have, let alone to move forward. How? By becoming that go-to guy (or girl) and daring to ask some uncomfortable questions.

“I am a successful professional speaker.”
That is an affirmation that I have told myself repeatedly, up to six times per day, for the last five years. That means I began telling it to myself before anyone had ever paid me for speaking or training! After almost 20 years in the mortgage business, I had created a new vision for myself, “To make my career as a professional speaker”. I told everyone that I was indeed a professional speaker. Whenever I was introduced at Circle K and Kiwanis events, it was as a professional speaker. I even launched my web site two and a half years before I got serious about marketing myself as a speaker!

MONDAY MOTIVATIONAL MOMENT
By Dave Kelly
“Really? I do?”
Absolutely. You were provided with everything you needed on the day you were born.
“Well then, why am I not happier, more successful, focused on a dream, and getting to where I want to be?”
Because you have forgotten what it is like to see possibilities and think of them as real in your life. Remember when you were a child and you dreamed of being a teacher, an astronaut, a star athlete, and an award winning actor–all in one? What happened to those dreams?

Lending a Hand to the Economys Victims
By Kevin M
A family living in a McMansion loses their home to foreclosure. An overbearing manager earning a six figure salary loses his job in a department shut down. The (former) most prosperous family in the neighborhood is forced to close down their business for lack of sales; there’s a for sale sign on their front lawn. A couple who drove high end cars and traveled often is facing bankruptcy. A women in old clothes approaches us in a shopping center, tells us her husband has lost his job several months ago, and they have no money to feed their children.
How do we react?
