I think the problem is also inertia. Our whole system is so entrenched in fossil fuels, oil especially, that the whole of society resists change. My guess is that change will come regardless, but in fits and starts, hampered at times by low oil prices, excellerated at others by price spikes.

What I think is most compelling is the potential that alt energy sources have to decentralize energy. Electric cars effectively eliminate dependence on oil conglomerates, while wind and solar have the potential to remove the utilities from our lives and budgets. If societal systems aren't embracing this (for obvious reasons) the average Dick and Jane on the street should be rushing toward it!

Alternative energy is the future. The oil spill is just a single symptom of the bigger problems with burning things to create energy. It is primitive, costly and it pollutes our environment.

There is an obvious reason we are stuck with metered forms of energy, instead of renewables; it is lucrative to energy providers. Also, it can be easily taxed by the government. Don't expect them to give up all this revenue without a fight.

Windmills and solar panels have been around forever and they are getting better every day. Electric vehicles are here and will be selling in volume later this year. The real trick is going to be generating clean renewable energy at a cost that is competitive with oil and coal. When that happens, it's all over for the pollution peddlers.
