How to efficiently do affiliate marketing on your blog?

There are numerous methods one can do to perform affiliate marketing effectively. From posting content regularly to ad promotion through different social platforms, marketers tend to create ingenious strategies to improve and leverage online advertising.

In this section, however, I will focus on various ways how you (as a newbie blogger) must carry out affiliate marketing that will yield positive results.

Write product reviews and informational articles

As a blogger, your number one medium to become a successful affiliate marketer is your website. And fortunately, it is exactly what you need to implement affiliate marketing’s top strategy which is content marketing. Hence, you should maximize your blog page’s usage.

The catch is: how should you do it?

Affiliate marketing acts as a bridge between the seller and the consumer. And you – as the marketer/blogger – must fill that gap in order to connect the two ends.

Writing in-depth product reviews and informational articles, for instance, is among the most effective link to connect sellers and buyers. Product or service reviews are valuable assets for online stores and digital solopreneurs. Essentially, it enlightens customers concerning the product or service they plan to buy or avail.

Based on a study conducted by Capterra, almost 68% of consumers tend to read online reviews first before they purchase an item. And 88% say they trust online reviews as much as they trust personal recommendations.

The statistics make sense. If you are a buyer and you want to make the most out of your money, the tendency is you will look for brands that offer high-quality products. Meaning you will need to check product reviews first before making a purchase.

That being said, below are some ways to write product and service reviews:

1. Compare two products/services

If product reviews open a buyer’s eyes to the features and other perks he can earn from a certain product, a comparison article informs him the differences to see what each product lacks as well as the benefits and disadvantages.

Essentially, you have to write a review of two affiliate products comparing each of their features. You can write down each of its positive and negative traits and how they can affect the buyer. It is also essential to give your personal opinion regarding the product or service as it makes the content more honest.

Apart from that, it would be better not to fill the review post with too many affiliate links. So, as much as possible, limit it up to 5 to 7 links only. Don’t forget to add images as well to make the content visually engaging.

2. Expert roundup post

Unlike product reviews, a roundup post is a collection of answers, opinions, tools, or strategies concerning a particular question or industry. In affiliate marketing, on the one hand, an expert roundup post is used more than the other mentioned categories. An expert roundup post is a valuable material for readers as it gives consumers ideas about what these experts think about the product or service they aim to buy. Say, the niche is digital marketing, you need to find individuals who are deemed “experts” in the said field.

You can make all sorts of roundup articles. But put in mind that your main goal is to drive web traffic too. Hence, optimize it by covering trending topics and most searched keywords.

3. How-to posts

As what the name suggests, how-to guides are content that tells or instructs readers how to execute a certain process, work, or idea. It is long, detailed, and contains in-depth information concerning a particular topic.

A how-to post is an excellent approach (as well as a substitute) to market products and services without being too salesy. It suits well with niches that involve products or services that require step-by-step guides on how to use the said items properly.

And if you noticed, from influencers to vloggers, people share tutorials most of the time. Hence, it became popular among bloggers as it attracts high web traffic compared to other types of content.

4. Featured post

A featured post can be any type of content. The only thing that sets it apart from the first three is that it is placed directly to the homepage.

What to include in your content

Now that you know the different ways to write a product review, here are a few tips and tricks to remember when writing your content:

  • Buyers tend to trust reviews that are personal and with the author’s honest opinions. So always try to make your reviews personal. Use first-person and second-person pronouns. Don’t also be afraid to give the article your own voice and style.
  • As mentioned, consumers tend to trust individuals who provide them with honest yet helpful insights. So, make sure to keep your assessment unbiased all the time. For instance, balance your review by providing both the pros and cons of the product.
  • Firsthand experience makes a review more honest, personal, and insightful. As such, I suggest you pick an item or a service that, if not often, you used occasionally.
  • Have you ever noticed the star rating in every product review you see in Google’s first page? Take advantage of it by using it too. Use WordPress’ star ratings feature to make your content more compelling and visually persuasive.

Enhance your lead generation strategy

Affiliate marketing’s main goal is to generate sales. Making sales, on the one hand, is impossible without leads to turn into a customer. As such, you will need effective ways to attract potential buyers.

The question is: how should a blogger like you do it?

The digital world has brought out a lot of clever and resourceful methods to mine leads. Running an affiliate marketing blog, however, requires strategies that involve content creation and optimization.

To give you an idea, the following lead generation techniques are my most recommended approaches:

Generate web traffic through SEO – The key to affiliate marketing on your blog

SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the method of enhancing the quality of content to increase its web visibility. It also refers to the improvement of a website’s organic search results. Essentially, it functions as a way to generate website traffic without the help of paid ads.

Mining leads through the help of SEO is, perhaps, the most used strategy in digital marketing. From affiliate marketers to online biz owners, improved web visibility equates to a high chance to gain web traffic.

Here are a few on-page and off-page SEO aspects you should remember:

  • Appropriate use of keywords
  • Use internal and external links
  • Use the right page title length
  • Keyword placement in titles
  • The length of meta description
  • The length of content (number of words)
  • Minimum and maximum number of keywords to use
  • Accessibility to search engines

Content promotion

Another way to gain potential customers is through content promotion. Backlinks, for instance, can significantly make a positive impact on your content and lead generation technique.

Backlinks are hyperlinks that connect two pages from two different websites. And as a blogger, you will want to earn hundreds (if not thousands) of external links pointing to your website. It is because:

  • It’s like a reference link that leads prospective buyers to open a door to your site
  • It signals Google and other search engines that your content or webpage is relevant and in return helps to rank the page on Google’s first page.

And the more relevant backlinks you have, the higher the chance to get more web traffic. Having said that, here are a few efficient ways to gain backlinks:

  • Create infographics and have it published on (if possible) reputable website linking to your page
  • Guest post to webpages that are related (if not the same) to your niche
  • Collaborate with your fellow bloggers and affiliate marketers.

These are all through the use of websites. But if you are quite knowledgeable in social media marketing, promoting your content through social media platforms is a proven and tested method as well. But the good thing about it is that it not only enables you to get direct web traffic, but it allows you to build an audience or community as well.

Conceptualize your content

When coming up with concepts and titles for your materials (articles, for example) I advise you to prioritize your readers’ demands. So, ask yourself: what do they want to read? How do they want to read it? What types of blog posts do they like to consume?

Take note of how you structure and convey your message too. Is it too salesy? Or is it better if you recommend the merchandise rather than pushing them to purchase it?

Having that said, here are a few things to remember when writing blog posts:

  • Write relevant and useful content
  • Write clear and compelling CTA (Call To Action)
  • Integrate visual aids such as photos, videos, memes, or GIFs
  • Don’t overwhelm your readers with very complicated sentence structures and technical words

Another thing to consider is how you present your materials. Provide them not just articles, but insightful yet engaging and easy-to-read content.

Build an email list to succeed at affiliate marketing on your blog

Another efficient method to augment your sales and affiliate promotions is through lead collection via building an email list. Building an email list can be done in many ways. But for bloggers, the best method is through providing gated content.

Gated content are materials that – in order for them to access it – require readers to submit their basic information including email addresses. Essentially, you will have to offer them something that is valuable and useful in exchange for their contact details.

For instance, you can publish a short e-Book covering one of the topics that is related to your niche. At the entry point of your sales funnel, make sure to place a sign-up form asking their contact information.

Once you have built your email list, you can then start building a good customer-seller relationship with them using email marketing. Begin by sending them a welcome email series. After that, continue to provide them useful and insightful content. Of course, you’ll have to make sure that it is not just valuable, but something that they need.

Place affiliate banners on your blog

In addition to lead generation and writing product reviews, placing affiliate banners on your blog is an excellent way to maximize your potential to earn. You can obtain these banners through joining affiliate programs.

You can then place these clickable banners in different areas of your site such as:

  • Header and footer
  • Sidebar
  • In emails
  • Embedded in blog posts

Affiliate marketing on your blog – Putting it all together

Dipping your toes into affiliate marketing seems a good idea these days. With the continuous rise of digital stores and solopreneurs, the demand for influential individuals to promote products and services increases as well.

It is a perfect side hustle – especially for bloggers – for most as it does not require a large amount of money to start. It lets people work at the comfort of their homes, which is apt for stay-at-home moms who wish to earn money online. And while it may take some time to see the results, affiliate marketing is indeed a lucrative online biz especially if you know how to run and execute it properly.

The only downside is that for starters, it will surely not be a smooth journey. It is why I wrote this article: to help aspiring online entrepreneurs in their first step towards affiliate marketing.

  1. Hi Kevin. I just wanted to thank you for giving me the opportunity to write for your site.

I really enjoyed writing this piece. Guys, if you have anything to add or I missed something, just let me know by commenting below. 🙂

  2. Hi,

Thanks for a very good article. I find one thing missing and that is about purchasing the products you review or alternatively obtaining reviews copies. If you blog is focused on the reviews of digital products, you normally cannot afford purchasing all the products yourself and on the other hand you cannot review products you have not tested yourself.

    Best regards

  3. Hello Henrik. Thanks, I’m glad you like it.

In my opinion, the best way to do this is if you as the reviewer promote only those products you personally like and use. That way, your review will be more genuine.

Secondly, when it comes to digital products, most of them have a free trial and it’s possible to test the main features… often all features.

In case, there is no free trial and it’s not possible for you to try it out, you can still create reviews and comparisons based on its features/pricing, etc. Obviously, those pieces won’t include your own experience thus making it less effective but it’s still an option.

  4. Hi Henrik – I have to agree with Peter, there’s no way any one person can possibly know all the tools and apps that are available when it comes to digital products. The best anyone can do is work with the ones they know well, then render an opinion as to others based on primary features and third-party reviews.

Thanks for reading, and thank you for your comment.
